The Quest of the Ludendorff

Chapter 19  East Meets South

“Aaaaahhhh!” Jia Li gave a moan of pure pleasure.  A mighty orgasm was developing in her, just one of many she had experienced in the last few hours.  She and Sir Archibald had made love almost continuously since finding their hiding place on the rim of the canyon.  The rush of the river waters below drowned out any sounds of their lovemaking and they had mated like cats in heat.

Jia Li had never experienced such ecstasy.  It was a sensation beyond anything she had known.  Never before had she had a real lover.  Her life had been devoted to fighting and being one of Larra’s companions, exploring the world of archeology.  During that time she had never come across anyone who had attracted her sexually.  Now, purely by chance she had found her first lover.

Similarly, Sir Archibald was caught up in a new emotion.  As a relatively low ranking member of the aristocracy of New Wessex, he had been allowed to have sexual relations only with members of his own social class.  He had never had a woman like Jia Li.  The Asian enchantress filled him with wonder, not only because of her great beauty and sexual prowess, but also because of the aura of mystery that surrounded her.  He realized that although her skin was lighter than his, that she was not a member of the White race.  He now knew that there were other standards of feminine beauty in the world, and not those narrowly defined by the ruling class of New Wessex.  In short, he was deeply in love with this enigmatic goddess.  She was a woman who had come out of nowhere, and he had had the good fortune to be the one she chose.  It was a violation of his duty to his kingdom, but it was a violation that he no longer cared about.

Jia Li pulled hard with her powerful legs, drawing him deep within her.  Sir Archibald was a very well endowed man, and penetration this deep took her to the limits of pleasure and pain.  But it was a pain she was well prepared to endure.  His swollen phallus was bringing her once again to a powerful climax.  He thrust hard, and at the same time bit down lightly on the erect nipple of her left breast.  “Oooooohhhh! Ooooh! Ohhhhhhhhh!” She came explosively, her vaginal muscles contracting like a velvet vise on Archibald’s tumescent staff.  With a cry he too erupted inside of her, blasting his sperm deep within her receptive womb.  Then, completely exhausted from their exertions, the two lovers enfolded one another in their arms and slept.

They awoke to the sound of shouting.  Someone was very close.  Could it be that the Ullabomba had tracked them to their hiding place?  The sound of men talking was right above them.  Jia Li recognized the language, although she did not understand all the words.  It was the Ullabomba all right.  She remembered that these tall Africans were masters of the rainforest.  No doubt they had used their skills to pick up the trail of the two lovers and had finally reached their hiding place.  They were a persistent bunch.  It must have taken them most of the previous day and part of the next to finally track them down.

Sir Archibald had drawn his sword and tried to push Jia Li farther back into the roots of the tree.  She had lost her spear when her horse had been killed and he considered her defenseless.  He was about to find out differently.

The roots of the tree and the ledge beneath them formed a natural defense.  It forced the Ullabomba warriors to climb down the roots and try to squeeze between them.  It left them vulnerable to attack from anyone sheltering in the roots.  The Ullabomba seemed to realize this and attempted to deal with the problem by attacking from as many directions at once as they could.  The ploy might have worked if only Sir Archibald had been there to defend, but he was not.  Jia Li joined him as soon as the attack began.  It was well that she did, because the dark-skinned knight was distracted by three Ullabomba trying to get through the roots on the right side of their hideaway, while several others came down the left side of the tree.  Jia Li tackled these interlopers empty handed.

But empty handed did not mean defenseless.  Only Larra could match Jia Li’s ability in unarmed combat.  The first of the tall warriors to come up against the seemingly defenseless woman got a rude surprise.  He came at her quite confidently, seeing only an unarmed female standing against him, but Jia Li used her martial talents well.  She waited until he tried to squeeze through the roots of the giant fig and attacked.  The small space between the roots did not leave the black warrior any room to maneuver.  Jia Li’s feet struck him a half dozen times in quick succession.  The first few blows dazed the seven-foot warrior.  The last two knocked him loose from his hold on the roots and dropped him into the canyon below.  He fell without a sound, too stunned to realize what had happened to him.  Without missing a beat, the Asian adventuress switched her attack to the next opponent.  This man had managed to use the short time Jia Li was involved with the first man to penetrate the root barrier.  Armed with a spear he advanced rapidly toward her.  He only made two steps before he too was stopped in his tracks.  Jia Li avoided his spear thrust and stepped inside his guard.  She struck hard at his solar plexus, knocking the wind out of him and doubling him up; then she straightened him out by bringing her knee up into his face.  The blow smashed his nose and knocked him almost unconscious.  A knife hand to the side of his throat and a palm heel to his chin ended the fight.  In less than twenty seconds Jia Li had taken out two of the enemy.  There remained, however, a third opponent.

This man moved toward her cautiously.  He had seen what had happened to his two companions.  Jia Li had no time to waste with sparring, however, another warrior was already clambering into position.  If she did not move quickly she would be facing two opponents at once.  Her opponent’s caution gave her time to retrieve the spear the second warrior had dropped.  Now she faced her enemy on an equal basis.  The Ullabomba warrior moved toward her, more confident now that she had adopted a weapon with which he was familiar.  His confidence, however, turned out to be badly misplaced.  Jia Li was expert with a number of Chinese hand weapons.  To her the spear was simply a variation of a weapon she had trained with many times.  Whirling the spear in a dazzling pattern, she lunged toward the advancing warrior, knocked aside his guard and thrust the wide blade through his heart.  The warrior hardly had the time to realize that he was overmatched before dying.  Jia Li had no more enemies.  The fourth warrior was hastily scrambling back up the fig roots and out of reach.  She turned in time to see Sir Archibald finish off the last of his adversaries.  They had survived the first assault.

Sir Archibald moved toward the exotic woman who had just defeated three formidable warriors with seeming ease.  Amazement flickered across his face.  She had fought barehanded better than he had with his sword.  With some embarrassment he recalled pushing her behind him for her protection.  This woman needed no protection.  She was quite capable of defending herself.  What manner of woman was she?  She was quite unlike anyone he had ever met.  He knew then, that he could never give her up.  He would betray his king and even give up his life before he allowed anyone to threaten her safety.

The attack seemed to be over.  Although Jia Li and Sir Archibald remained on guard for the next half-hour no more attacks occurred.  It appeared that the Ullabomba were not prepared to continue to take the sort of losses that Sir Archibald and Jia Li had inflicted.  They took the bodies of the warriors they had killed and defeated and pushed them over the ledge into the raging river below.  After awhile, it became obvious that no more attacks were likely to develop.  Sir Archibald took Jia Li in his arms again.  Did they dare to make love with the treat of the Ullabomba so close by?  Sorely tempted they restrained their passion. They exchanged a long kiss, but further sexual activity would have to wait for a later date.  First they needed to find a way to escape.  Then they could celebrate their victory.

Time passed.  It was growing dark.  Although there were no more attacks Jia Li knew that night would present serious danger.  In her first encounter with the Ullabomba she and Katie had been overwhelmed and captured in a night attack.  The darkness held no fear for the Ullabomba.  They were as much at home in the darkness of the night of the rainforest as they were in the day.  She imparted this information to Sir Archibald.  The knight nodded.  He had fought the Ullabomba before.  Although lacking sophisticated weaponry, they were a highly cultured if rather brutal civilization.  Their architecture rivaled that of ancient
Rome, and their bravery was unparalleled.  They were also very persistent.  He knew that they would attack when darkness came.

“We had better find a way out of here,” said Jia Li.  “We have no food or water and the Ullabomba are most likely to attack again.”

Sir Archibald nodded again.  “Perhaps when it gets a little darker we might have a chance to escape undetected.”

“Perhaps,” Jia Li agreed.  But she was rather dubious.  The hiding place she had chosen was turning out to be not such a good place after all.  It was difficult to get into, but also difficult to get out of.  She looked over the edge of the ledge they were sheltering on.  She noticed that the roots of the great tree reached almost to the rushing waters below.  “Can you swim?”

“Not well.  I have had little occasion to develop that skill.”

“It may be our only way to escape.”

Sir Archibald thought for a second.  “I think you are right.  I will chance it.  Hopefully, we will not have to swim far.”

By now it was almost completely dark.  There was just enough light for them to find their way down the network of roots that spread down to the surface of the surging waters.  Jia Li herself was somewhat apprehensive about this venture.  The water was moving very quickly and it was quite likely that they might be swept under by the force of the current.  But there seemed little other choice.  Clinging to a root she lowered herself into the water.  Beside her Sir Archibald did the same.

After the heat of the tropical day the rushing water was surprisingly cold.  She and Sir Archibald would have to swim hard and try to make it to a safe landing as soon as possible.  She let go the root.  Immediately the river swept her away.  She was a good swimmer and tried to keep a lookout for Sir Archibald.  She would help him if she could, but within seconds she was pulled into the center of the stream.  She had to use all of her strength to make her way back to the shore.  The water, however, was rushing between steep cliffs.  There was no place to land.  The water carried her along with great speed.  Again and again she tested the shore, trying to find a place to land.  Every now and then she called out, hoping to hear a return call from her lover, but the noise of the river drowned out all other sounds.  The water whirled her around and around as it surged past hidden boulders.  She swam until she was almost exhausted.  There seemed to be no end to the steep canyon walls.  And then, just when she was at the end of her strength, her feet touched bottom.  The water swept her into the lee of a giant stone that broke the surface of the water.  The force of the water diminished enough that she was able to gain her footing and wade to the edge of the canyon.  There she found a small rocky beach.  With her last strength she stumbled from the river and threw herself down on the pebbled surface.  She was cold, wet, and weaponless, but she was safe for the time being.  But where was Sir Archibald?

Even if Jia Li had not been so exhausted from her struggle with the river she would not have been able to move far from the spot where she had emerged.  It was still dark and there was no way for her to determine where she was or even begin to search for Sir Archibald.  She decided to make the best of it.  Curling herself up into a ball in order to conserve body heat, she made herself as comfortable as she could and then slept.

She awoke just before dawn.  Already there was some light creeping into her sanctuary.  Before long she was able to make out that she was situated on a pebbly beach that had been created by the deposition of a small tributary stream.  She determined that by following the stream she would be able to make her way back up to the top of the gorge.  She was still feeling the effects of her fight with the river, but forced to herself to get moving.  She needed food and there was none to be had in the small beach area where she had landed.  She hoped that once she got out of the gorge she would be able to find something to eat and perhaps work out some sort of plan for finding Sir Archibald.  She hoped that he would be somewhere close by.

It took her almost two hours to make her way up the winding creek bed to the top of the gorge.  In several places she had to climb up small waterfalls in order to be able to continue.  Once back in the rainforest proper she looked about for edible plants.  She had learned a little about rainforest flora from Larra, who had been stranded in a rainforest herself on her first visit to
Africa.  The rainforest had a huge variety of plants, most of them of no food value.

As she walked, she tried to stay as close to the canyon as possible.  Sir Archibald, she was sure, was somewhere in its depths.  She refused to entertain the idea that he might not be alive.  He was the only man she had ever loved.  He had to be alive!

She walked for over an hour before she came across anything edible.  It was a small bush bearing edible nuts.  Unfortunately, it was past its season and few nuts remained.  She gathered what few there were and munched on them as she walked.  The small amount of food made her feel better, but she knew that she would need more food soon, and it was the smell of cooking that distracted her from her chosen path.

Someone very close by was roasting meat.  The odor was unmistakable.  She was drawn toward the smell as if by magic, but she went cautiously all the same.  There seemed to be a well-worn trail leading in the direction the smell was coming from, but she deliberately avoided it.  It was very likely such an approach would be guarded.  Instead she carefully picked her way through the denser vegetation of the rainforest, keeping a few feet from the trail.  In a few minutes she could hear the sound of voices.  It was the Ullabomba.  She had stumbled upon their campsite.

Dropping to her belly, Jia Li crawled slowly toward the sound of the warriors’ voices.  Soon she could see a group of about twenty Ullabomba gathered about a blazing fire over which they were roasting some sort of meat.  Jia Li’s mouth watered.  Her empty stomach growled at the smell of food so close by.  However, she could not hope to get even a morsel with so many Ullabomba warriors in the encampment.  She would have to bide her time.  Perhaps when the warriors were finished eating they would move off and she would be able to eat what they left behind.

The Ullabomba appeared to be in a hurry.  Very efficiently they breakfasted and broke camp.  Within half an hour of Jia Li’s arrival they were gone.  She waited a further fifteen minutes to be sure the warrior’s had departed, then she crept tentatively from her hiding place.  Jia Li had learned enough from her first encounter with the tall black warriors to know that she did not want to be captured by them again.

As she had hoped the Ullabomba had left behind a portion of their food.  She could not tell what it was, except for that fact that it was some sort of cooked game animal.  The Ullabomba were expert hunters and foragers.  They would have no trouble finding something to eat in an environment as abundant in wildlife as the rainforest.

The meat was still on the spit that the black warriors had been using to cook it.  Quickly she picked it up and took it back to her hiding place.  There was no sense in taking any chances.  She had been ambushed once by the Ullabomba.  She did not want a repeat of that event.

Since she had no utensils she pulled the meat from the bone with her fingers and teeth.  Although not much of a meat eater, she was famished and found the food delicious.  Soon she was satiated.  Wiping her hands on some leaves she got to her feet.  What to do now?  Should she return to the river and try to find Sir Archibald?  Or should she continue in the direction they had been heading in the hopes that he might have escaped drowning and headed home?  Or should she try to find her companions?  There was no telling what sort of trouble they might be in.

As it turned out, she did not have to make a decision.  Just as she was considering heading back to the river and looking for Sir Archibald, she heard a noise from the direction the Ullabomba had gone.  Someone was coming back down the trail.  Carefully she drew farther back into the shelter of the rainforest.  Several Ullabomba entered the clearing.  They were carrying their spears as if ready to attack and they headed straight for her hiding place.

Jia Li realized that somehow the black warriors had figured out where she was.  There were too many to fight and she was unarmed, so she slowly backed away, using the cover of the thick vegetation to hide her movements.  As she did so, however, she became aware of movement behind her.  She whirled about, and there in a semi-circle were another dozen Ullabomba.  While she had been raiding their campsite the resourceful warriors had been circling behind her.  She now realized that somehow they had detected her presence even before she went after the food.  Their exit from the camp had been meant to give them time to cut off her escape route.  Twenty fierce warriors now surrounded her.

Whipping her head from side to side she looked for a way out of her plight.  But there was none.  She would have to fight.  But the Ullabomba were approaching cautiously with lowered spears.  Everywhere she looked she faced a forest of spearpoints.  If she attempted to carry the battle to the enemy she would surely be speared.  But if she stood where she was she would face the same fate.  Hesitant about what to do, she waited until her enemy came within range.  Her only chance was to try to dodge past the spearpoints and try to fight her way past the warriors before they had a chance to recover.

To her surprise, however, the warriors suddenly stopped their advance.  Instead they forced a solid circle about her, their spearpoints only a few feet away from her body.  She realized that she was trapped.  The only way past those needle sharp spears was if the warriors holding them let her pass.

She turned slowly awaiting the next move of the Ullabomba.  For a few seconds no one moved.  Then the tallest warrior stepped forward.  He was naked like all of the Ullabomba, but wore a plume of ostrich feathers on his head, fastened by a band of solid gold.  Gold bands ornamented his wrists and arms and his eight-foot spear was embossed with gold and jewels.

“Surrender, Golden One,” he said.

Jia Li had been imprisoned long enough in her previous encounter to understand some of the language of the black warriors.  “Golden One.”  That must be a reference to her skin color.  Why she was being treated with such caution she did not know.  It appeared that the Ullabomba had an undue respect for her.  She was, however, totally at their mercy.  Did she have a choice?  One of the warriors stepped forward.  Reluctantly she allowed him to place his hands on her beautiful shoulders.  The warrior pushed down, forcing her to her knees.  A hollow feeling filled her stomach.  She had been captured again.  And the Ullabomba were not known to be kind to their prisoners.
