Chapter 2 –Late Afternoon

Dragon walked out to her car. She would change when she got out near the site. She’d have to park far away and walk to the farm because she couldn’t risk the chance of being discovered. Helena had gone over the plan time and time again. It was risky, that was for sure, but the monster needed to be stopped. She was hoping to disarm it with the taser and then knock it out. At that point she wasn’t sure what she’d do, either place a call to the local P.D. or terminate it if necessary. She was hoping it wouldn’t be the latter.

She parked her car in a deserted area and changed into her costume making sure to leave no details of her identity behind. She climbed onto a motorcycle she had stashed there about an hour earlier and headed off to get closer to the farm. The cycle was loud but she intended to park at least a mile away from where the predator would strike.

The temperature had risen and now it felt like a warm September day rather than a cool October one. There seemed to be a hint of rain in the air, but it wasn’t supposed to rain this far north. She really didn’t want to be sitting out in the rain waiting for that thing to arrive. That wouldn’t be good.

She parked the cycle and started walking toward her destination. As she walked she studied the terrain as best as she could. She had already studied maps of the area for hours and knew that the forest behind the farm extended for miles. A perfect place for that thing to hide itself, she thought. There was also a shallow stream running through part of the forest pretty close to the farm.

She reached the farm just as the sun started to head towards its descent and found her hiding spot. From what she had gathered the monster usually attacked from the back of the farm when the animal pens or stable could be seen. It seemed to like the idea of being able to strike quickly from the hidden forest and then disappear back into it. She settled in some tall grass and bushes with a view of the pens and waited for her prey to arrive.

Emma Van Ryan sat in her car and thought about what she was about to do. She looked out the window at the dwindling light of the afternoon and wondered how he would take it. It was long overdue.

The rain fell on the car as she sat and waited. He always made her wait, as if he knew how much the anticipation killed her. Her car was parked in the Smithville Community College parking lot. The school was located about one hour east of Tempo City. He insisted their meeting spot be far away, after all he was married. She thought about Will Tratt and how she felt about him.

When she had first met Will she was dating her ex-husband Jake. He was one of his best friends and from the first time they met there had been an attraction. Nothing had ever happened and eventually both of them had found themselves married, but whenever they got together there would be innocent flirting when they were alone. They both knew they were hot for each other but neither would ever act on it. That is until four months ago. She had been at a barbecue at their house, everyone had been drinking and feeling good and they were doing their usual flirting thing when they found themselves alone in the kitchen. She didn’t know if it was the wine affecting her or her career as a crimefighter that was making her nuts but when he reached for her and kissed her she kissed back. The rest was history, and soon enough they were meeting here every couple of weeks for a 4-hour screwfest like teenagers. As much as she enjoyed it she knew how wrong it was and tonight was the night she ended it forever.

A car pulled up next to hers and he waved through the window. Her cell phone rang and she answered.

“You ready”, he asked.

“Yes, but we have to talk Will.”

“Fine, follow me to the hotel and before we get started we can talk. Okay?”

“Fine”

She hung up and followed his car through the rain to their hotel. She parked in her usual spot outside of their first floor room, number a-121. This gave them easy access to her car in case they needed to get anything. He would park on the other side of the hotel so that their cars were separated.  Again she waited for him. As she did she thought about her friends. Dragon was going upstate to get that beast that had raped Midnight and Lighting was going after the Haitian mob Loyalty. She should be helping them, but had decided that this needed to end tonight; it simply couldn’t go on anymore.

He came around the corner and put the key in the door. He turned and waved for her to get out. “Here goes nothing”, she thought and got out of the car and headed towards her lover.

Clara Dowd looked over the reports again and talked to herself. “It looks like he has about 30 visitors in from Haiti. Five of them seem to be band members, two of them are listed as priests, twenty- two of them are family or friends both male and female and one is his 18 year old son Devon.”

After her ordeal she knew Loyalty had to be stopped at all costs. Lou Lou had made it clear that she was a wanted woman, not only as Lightning but also as Detective Dowd. It was only a matter of time before they came for her. Instead of waiting she would strike first. She knew there was cocaine at KoKo’s mansion, everyone did, no one could touch him due to his connections and bribes. Tonight she would though, tonight at the very least she would destroy his inventory and that would pose serious problems for him and his associates.

She looked at the map of his compound again. It was built and positioned like a fortress. It was isolated in the middle of one of the worst neighborhoods in Tempo City so anyone who looked to be different was spotted by his crew in the neighborhood and reported immediately. If you made it to his compound it was protected by a 15-foot high stonewall that ran all around the perimeter except for the 15-foot Iron Gate that allowed entry. He had about 20 men on site at all times there as well, and tonight he also had the Haitians. His family also lived there. His wife Stella was a stunning woman but was no more than a live in slave for him. He also had 7 small children ranging in age from 5 to 13 that lived there with them.

She was ready. She looked at the clock and saw that it was almost 5:00 p.m. The sun would be setting soon and then she’d be on her way. She went to her closet and flipped a switch in the back and a panel opened. Hanging there was the greatest symbol of strength and purity in Tempo City-the blue spandex costume of the crimefighter known as Lightning. She got dressed for work.
