SUPERGIRL'S SLAVERY

PART III - Escape

Chapter Seven

by The Wizard

Supergirl regained consciousness slowly. The lighting in her cell seemed different and there was a light after-taste of the gas that she had received, robbing her of her consciousness. She snapped alert when she realized that they had decelerated and now were apparently traveling at sublight speeds. She wondered why. They could not be at Slaver's destination, already. Something was different and she could not quite place what it was. She strained against the bands that held her to her cell wall, but to no avail. All she could do was to move her head a little ways away from the wall.

Supergirl felt stronger than she had since her capture, but not enough to effect her own rescue. She was not going anywhere, the bands made no indication that they would release her, holding her firmly against the metal bulkhead. She wondered about the system that they were now traveling in and what type of star, or stars, were close by. Obviously they were not traveling through a system with a yellow star, else she would have been able to rip through her bindings like they were paper. Then, she knew that Slaver was not that stupid as to give her even a remote chance of escape. He was not like the other egotistical, but over-confident villains that she had faced before. Supergirl wished that he was, it would make things for her so much easier. Now, she was aboard a intergalactic spacecraft, traveling further and further each second away from her adopted planet, Earth. Who there would know that she was missing?, she asked herself. Superman would not think that anything was wrong for a long time, since they were used to not seeing or hearing from each other for long periods of time, especially if they were on space missions. Superman would probably think that she was on one of her undercover jobs, and would not think that anything was amiss for quite some time.

Supergirl glared in anger at the band of strange flexible metal that wrapped around her upper arm, wishing that she still had her heat vision so that she could bun it off. She gasped in alarm when she felt her arm around and under the band grow warmer. Her powers! They were coming back! That was why she felt different. But, her recovery from her power loss would be a slow one, and it might only be her heat vision, she knew. But her heat vision could be enough to escape with, especially if she used it wisely.

She tried again, this time putting more effort into the task, all of her will going into making her heat vision work and burning away her bondage. The band began to glow and she grew uncomfortable under the heat that was slowly and steadily rising. She was not invulnerable apparently. She felt pain and knew that she could easily burn herself if was not careful. The metal started to warp, and Supergirl wondered what sort of metal it was that held her, perhaps even being partially organic. It was certainly alien to her experience. Perhaps it was of the same type that Slaver had used on Earth to baffle her X-ray vision on Earth.

The band suddenly gave a quick jerk and went slowly back into the wall, like a wounded animal crawling into it's burrow. Supergirl started on the other bands that restrained her, a new sense of urgency in her now hope filled heart. She would have shouted for joy at this very small victory, but knew it was a very small victory indeed. But, after all her defeats and humiliations at the hands of the slaver, it sure felt good!

She prayed against Ballus's return as she moved her head from band to band, heating them one by one. Ballus perhaps knew that she had regained consciousness, being the empath that he was. Unless he was occupied with something important, or asleep. She did not think that made any difference, recalling what her cousin had told her about Trulls. Perhaps, she thought, the reason for the ship to come out of warp drive was what was keeping Ballus busy. She hoped that it was something big that would keep the whole ship busy. She wondered if they were in a battle. She didn't think so, but without all of her kryptonian powers she could not be free. She would find out what was going on soon enough, and hopefully would be able to use it to her advantage.

Soon, all the bands had retreated into the cell wall. Free at last! Now, it was time to work on rescuing the other captives in the ship and escaping from Slaver.
