Separate Missions by Shatterhead

Chapter 1- Daytime

The man sat at his desk and read the final report. He was pleased with how the events had turned out the night their mission had begun. He flipped the pages and read the report on Doctor Reiner and his family. According to the report he had met with some of the Programs members and was sure he or his family didn’t remember anything about that night, as a matter of fact he hadn’t been in that part of town in years.

The second item of interest was about the device they had created. It had worked fantastically, and Reiner had made some improvements to the original framework. Basically he had improved its performance, however he had also discovered a flaw that he used to disable it. That was also a good thing, now they could correct it. The Inhibitor was current with Technology and they were working on improving it.

Finally, the report could not pinpoint exactly what had happened that night. He knew how they got their powers back but there was nothing concrete to explain how they got away. The good news was that although they were fine with the gangs abusing the ladies they were worried about them going too far. They were needed alive and if they were transported they would have to have been recovered. Thankfully that never happened.

He sat back and lit up a cigar. The Techs were back on the case and they would take center stage for a while. He would go back to watching, waiting and monitoring his people until his superior deemed it necessary to act again.

Helena Choi flew down the interstate with the window open. She had sunglasses on and her black hair flew behind her as she drove and enjoyed the spectacle of autumn in the north. This was probably the last day that she could get away with driving with the windows open she thought to herself, she had gotten lucky with the weather reaching 79 degrees today. She had an old rock song blasting on the radio and was thoroughly enjoying the experience as she drove north away from the city.

“Wow, I always forget what a difference there is between here and the city.” She gripped the wheel tighter as she accelerated pushing 80 MPH.

She was headed towards a small town about 130 miles north of Tempo City. Ever since the night at the warehouse she had been trying to discover the whereabouts of the beast that had assaulted Midnight and escaped. After diligently scanning local newspapers and studying any kind of animal report she had finally gained a lead. A farmer had disappeared leaving his family behind. The item that got the attention of the press was that his left hand was found out in one of his fields along with three butchered cows. Apparently he had come upon a wild animal trying to make a meal out of his livestock and attempted to defend his property. He had not been seen again.

After noticing that article she began to check local area newspapers for anything strange and soon enough she had other examples of animal mutilations. She then contacted her friends through the website she had set up to see if any of this might seem familiar to them. Whisper had nothing, but Lightning was able to provide better leads. Soon enough she had pinpointed the creature’s pattern and feeding schedule. She couldn’t be sure that it was the same beast but something was going on up here and she needed to getaway anyway, it was long overdue.

She looked at the next sign coming up; she was closing in on the town of Smitston, population 790. That was her destination. She slowed down, lowered the radio and thought about her mission for tonight

The thing seemed to feed around 8:00 p.m. It had fed in a predictable pattern so far. She had mapped out its previous attacks and was confident that she knew exactly where it would strike tonight. Lightning had wanted her to wait for her, but Dragon couldn’t wait. One person had disappeared so far and she wouldn’t put the lives of others at stake for her safety. It wasn’t the way of a superheroine. Lightning knew this but still tried to convince her to wait, however Helena had made up her mind to go after the beast.

She thought about the weapons she had brought with her and went down her checklist again. She had brought a taser gun to bring the beast down, after the way Lighting had handled it she figured electricity was the way to go. She had also brought a tranquilizer with her to make sure the thing was out after she hit it with the taser. She also had her blade with her, which she always carried.

She had to check into the hotel and then head out to the farm after dark. She was looking forward to dealing with the beast that had hurt one of her own. “What a way to spend a Friday night” she thought as she exited the highway.

The students stared at her intently, their youthful faces entranced by what she was saying. She glanced at the clock on the wall just as the last bell of the week began to ring spreading joy throughout her classroom. “Wait, wait”, she yelled as the kids began to get their books together. “Settle down now, settle down. Don’t forget your projects are due the week after Halloween. That’s two Friday’s from now.” She could sense their anticipation; they were just about jumping out of their seats. “The other thing is ……Have a great weekend. Good Bye.” She smiled as she said it.

“Thank you Miss Van Ryan!” With that they scrambled for the buses.

“Well another successful week in the books, time for the weekend to begin.” She muttered to herself. She was hoping to get her weekend off to a wonderful start tonight. Tonight things would change.

She walked into the faculty staff room to get her bag and her change of clothes and thought about where she was headed and what she was about to do yet again.

“Stop it. Don’t do this to yourself” she thought. This happened every time. She knew it was wrong but she couldn’t help it, she was entitled to happiness too.  She did a lot of good; she helped a lot of people. That bounty hunter had given her these doubts, the seed had already been planted but he watered it and helped it grow. She’d been divorced for a long time now and missed having someone in her life.  However, it was time to end this.  He knew it was coming too, it had gone way too far and things had gotten out of hand.

“Let me give him something to remember me by.” She thought.

She pulled the tight brown sweater over her bra. Next she removed the ankle length skirt she had worn for class and pulled her thigh high black stockings up her legs pausing to make sure the line was perfectly placed to run down the back of her legs. Next she pulled her mid-thigh, form fitting skirt up her legs. It showed her gorgeous ass off fantastically. She left her brown hair in a ponytail; she thought it gave her a sense of innocence to go along with her sultry outfit. One last look in the mirror to check her make-up convinced her that she looked very hot. “Yeah, I’ll keep the glasses on.” she thought. She slid her 5-inch pumps on and headed out the door.

“Whoa, check you out!” It was one of her co-workers, Alyssa. “Who is the luckiest man alive?”

“Oh, no one. I am going out with the girls tonight and felt like dressing up for once. Just some drinks and dinner.” She answered.

“At 4:00 p.m.? Isn’t it a little early for that?” asked Alyssa.

“What can I say, we work hard and want to get an early start. See ya Monday.” And with that Whisper walked out the door towards her Friday night.

The detective was steaming “Captain, this is complete bullshit and you know it! This is our chance to put Loyalty out of business or at the very least nail that fat bastard KoKo and we can’t do anything!”

“Listen Dowd. I know what you mean, I know how frustrating this job can be, but we can’t get a warrant. There’s nothing we can do about it.”

“I did all the leg work! He has a ton of family and associates coming in for this meeting at his mansion tonight, are you going to tell me you honestly think nothing will be on his premises?” asked the detective.

“What did Customs have to say?” the Captain was getting annoyed.

“You know what they said. They always say the same thing, that they have nothing on them, that they’re clean. I don’t believe it, he has someone on the inside.” Somehow KoKo’s shipments always arrived with a Haitian drum band that came to play at his parties.

“Listen Clara, you’re a great cop but you’re obsessed with Loyalty. It’s Friday, take the weekend off and go relax for a while. Without the warrant we can’t do anything, I’m sorry. Maybe next time.” He shrugged his shoulders.

“Fine, maybe next time.”

“Sorry” he said as she stormed out the door.

“I know someone who doesn’t need a warrant” detective Dowd thought as she walked out the door.
