Chapter 2 –The Easy Way Gets Harder

Whisper stepped through the curtains and walked into the tent. She paused and studied what she was looking at.

There were about 100 folding chairs set up for the audience, a walkway led down the middle of the seats and ended in a low platform that was about a foot in height. In the middle of the platform was what seemed to be a low pulpit but it was really more like a polished oak tabletop with thick iron legs that seemed to be bolted into the ground. Behind that was a large chair in which a man sat.

Whisper looked around making sure that she got as familiar with her surroundings as possible. There were curtains behind her running along the circumference of the tent and there only seemed to be the one opening from which she had entered.

The man stood up and walked towards the edge of the platform. Now she was better able to size him up. He stood about 6 foot 1 and had a slim build. She guessed that he probably weighed about 170 pounds. He had a full head of gray hair and piercing blue eyes that she could see from her position at the back of the tent. He was dressed in conventional Preacher dress, all in black.

She got an uneasy feeling in her stomach as the man stepped down off of the platform and onto the floor. There was something disturbing about him. She placed her hands and her hips, concentrated and spoke to him.

“Stop right there.”

“Are you using that fantastic power of yours on me right now, it is quite amazing young lady.” He stopped walking towards her.

“Only a fraction of it.” She lied. “Place your hands up and turn around.”

He did as he was told. “Where are those girls that have disappeared after attending your carnival?”

“They have found their calling in life my young heroine. They now have seen the light and are experiencing truth for the first time in their lives.”

Her head was beginning to pound. She had to subdue him and get him out of here. Why was she hesitating?

“What….what does that mean?”, she asked.

“I’d love to show you what I mean. Why tell you when I can give you a taste of what they have experienced?” he turned around.

“TURN AROUND AND PUT YOUR HANDS UP!” she yelled.

He walked towards her. Suddenly she felt like her mind was invaded. Thoughts formed in her mind.

********there is no escape*******surrender********surrender

She grabbed her head with both hands and sent a pulse towards the approaching Reverend.

He fell into the rows of chairs. He glared at the young woman.

“What is he? How can he fight me? I have to warn Dragon.”

********surrender*******hopeless********give your body********

“NO, NO”

The Reverend approached again. Whisper fell to her knees with her hands holding her pounding head.

“GET OUT OF MY HEAD. GET OUT OF MY THOUGHTS”

“I will forever be in your thoughts after tonight. You and your friends will suffer for invading my privacy. If only I could keep you.”

Not a word was spoken as Reverend James and Whisper fought a battle over control of their thoughts and minds. He continued to implant messages in her mind.

*********give your mind*******surrender*******pointless****

And she continued to fight back.

“GET OUT. GET OUT. GET OUT. GET OUT OF MY MIND!!”

A luminescent face appeared out of the shadows above the kneeling brunette. It was a mask much like the one worn in that horror movie about Halloween.

Whisper heard something behind her and tore her face away from the Reverend’s and looked up into the expressionless mask.

****fear***********horror*********surrender you whore****GIVE IN TO ME***

She gasped in horror as the hulking man plunged a syringe into her shoulder and injected her with something.

“AYYYYYYYYYYYY” she screamed in horror.

The last thoughts she had were not her own.

*******WHORE*************WHORE *************WHORE*****

She collapsed onto the ground.
